Report of the Julien Doré’s live in “Astrolabe (Orleans) and “Café de la danse (Paris)

Hardly recovered from the jet lag, and at the end of first day full of feelings of musical, artistic, creative and especially human reunion, all the conditions were there to live this Julien Doré's first concert in the Astrolabe.
The heart, the ears and the wide open eyes, I was impatient and curious.
We wait another good half an hour before doors open.. The public is of any age and there were not only women! The men were very present also.
After a fast check of bags and tickets in the entry (not very effective what allowed to have some beautiful videos on the net ;-)) we reach the concert hall after having a drink. The room is not very big and especially without any ventilation. The heat is sleepy. Darko Fitzgerald makes a first soporific part. I regret among others his accompaniments made partially of synthesizers in playback for a concert live.
We are little on the side but not far from the stage, my height allows me to have a good general view.
Break, and Julien Doré arrives finally with all his musicians. Where from I am I see on the stage a set of lounge: big leather armchair for Julien Noël, pianist and keyboard player, lamp, brilliant rabbit put on a piece of furniture as a trinket and instruments with this magnificent double bass in the middle of electric guitars! He starts with " Les Bords de mer/The seasides " then " Piano Lys/Piano Lily ". And there, that's it, the temperature of the room is forgotten or almost. The solid and alive music floods the room.
With the seasides and Morgane Imbeaud (of the group Cocoon) beside him , we enter gently and confidentially its live. As an invitation, a given hand.
Then "Piano Lys": I admit that it was not the one that I preferred to listen to in the album, but since his lives, it gets all its sense, its whole beauty bursts in broad daylight with a stage setting and an orchestration of which he is a specialist. He gives himself all, solid in the middle of the musicians and between two flashy cymbals riveted to the hands.
I am completely transported by the music, rich, alive and meaning of a given atmosphere. It is what fascinates me most with Julien's Doré's, this capacity to express a music which looks like him, where his way of being on stage is always in coherence with the music, or it is can be the opposite;-)
He played 14 pieces among which 11 from the Ersatz ("Les soirées parisiennes/The Parisian evenings", "Deux mots/Two words" and "Dans tes rêves/In your dreams" were not on the setlist), an unpublished work " Bien au-delà/Indeed beyond " in duet with Morgane, "Dolce Vita" in homage to his partner Christophe for Ersatz and "Hegel" a composition that he wrote for Judith Godrèche's film.
In this concert I retain “Piano Lily” with pointed vocal in the end which are by no means there to impress by vocal exploit (but remarkable!) but indeed to plunge us definitively into a surrealist atmosphere and get lost " upstream to cetaceans " and of their shouts of distress punctuated all the way by his sounds of cymbals.
"Acacia/Locust tree", which he sings in a uncluttered way leaving all the place for the beauty of the melody, with the Armand Meliès's guitar's chords and the velvety and delicate voice of Morgane, Piece almost murmured for a liked and lost person and whose the choirs of Morgane reminds us the presence.
The Jeff's intro (the drummer) on The limits
"Bouche pute/Whore mouth", and its amazing ad lib final. It starts with a riff of Julien's acoustic guitar which puts bases for one of the most memorable instrumental moments. And there, I was bewildered by the lack of reaction of the public which reacted to the easy jokes of Julien (but much less awkward or more mastered than the last year) but does not have applauds the chorus, even if the song was not ended, there was a break which was made just for that, to share this musical enjoyment wanted with the public and which struck me quite hard.
"First Lady" where Julien lets himself go for a hot performance. Pat on the back, even there for the orchestration and the performance because to make reappear this piece without the jazz band of the "Sacre du Tympan", it is a challenge !
To end, I was very curious to see how Julien Doré was going to move us with a directory rather quiet in view of the album and without the additions of brass instruments and voice of Christophe which are very locatable on the album.
He transcends everything by taking us in an incredible and unexpected musical bath. It is what I retain of the concert of Orléans and it is because of that this concert was the strongest for me.

The next day at "Le Café de la Danse" in Paris, we were very well placed and sat, thus in better conditions to appreciate in best the concert. But the context was for him too different, show case with many guests of showbusiness and with the presence of his close relations.
The same set on stage, but more smart dress and shirt opened without tie to face the heat of the room better ventilated than the day before.
He starts with "Piano Lys" which remains for me the must of the evening for all the reasons said higher and the same an ultimate very shrill note, which he had not made in Orléans and which takes me at once in the rediscovery.
The same setlist as in Orléans with " In my dreams " in more with the cooperation of David Scrima in guest. The same setlist but completely different live. Less musical emotion in my felt, I did not relive this pleasure felt the first time. The lack of sleep but also can be the fact of remaining sat what is difficult for me in concert is can be the cause. Julien has spoken more, he joked more, the public reacted also much more, in his performances on stage and in that of the musicians who share completely the stage with him. It is also Julien Doré's unique side for me, to have the presence which bursts the stage without ever putting in the shade those who accompany him. All exist on stage, and except Springsteen whom I follow for years with his E Street Band, I have no memor like that with the other artists that I saw in live. (But I saw neither Beatles nor Stones!) there is the others, naturally who make part of the best and who lasted. Julien Doré is of this tempering.
I felt more sharing between him and his public.
I do not come back on the pieces which marked me, it is the same that in Orléans, with one point more for First Lady, interpreted even more thoroughly than the day before and Pudding Morphina with vocal break in the high-pitched note always for the atmosphere of the song started and concluded in a very dark way in the grave voice. It remembered me Patric Watson also musician of atmosphere.
He did a come-back with Dolce Vita, SS in Uruguay and Hegel and left apparently happy by repeating that he wants to continue to live his music on stage, that it is his life. I liked this concert for the felt swap, for the promises which it supposes for the music of tomorrow in France and somewhere else I hope so !
For me, Julien Doré is for his enthusiast public, what the fine art school was for him: a detonator which develops our artistic senses. Because of that, I thank him appreciatively.
