So, we start… It can be that to be critical is a difficult task, even downright painful. For this Patrick Watson's second album, it is an enjoyment. With Closed to paradise, which follows upon Just another ordinary day (2003), we are overjoyed on multicolored waves, as in the film Yellow submarine. It is also necessary to know that Watson, the main composer, does not see this disk as a solo project, but indeed as that of a band that goes by his name.
Influences… A matter is clear, mister Watson listened to Meddle and Live at Pompéi of Pink Floyd. We recognize the sounds of guitars and the echos dear to the British band. We feel also a lot the influence of Paul McCartney, Tim Buckley, Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley. But what we hear especially, it is Patrick Watson. He got well how to assimilate these influences and to put in it enough himself so that it is not just a weak copy, but indeed an album with intimate and enchanting atmospheres. Obviously, when we quote Satie and Debussy as source of inspiration, we expect outstanding melodies and arrangements in the piano. And the album does not disappoint. The song Drifters is particularly effective, also reminding Yann Tiersen occasionally. Songs Daydreamer and Weight of the World reminds us the music of Danny Elfman and the other theme music of this kind.
The voice… The piano is not the only strength of Patrick. He has an exceptional voice, and he knows how to compose songs to emphasize it. It is there that the influence of Nick Drake and Buckley most is felt. The narrative strength of the Patrick's voice, even without the contribution of the words, seems to reveal us a hidden story.
The arrangements... Compositions are of an extraordinary quality. We well imagine listening to these songs with the only piano and the voice of Patrick, but no, we are even more cherished. The group and the invited musicians made, in the arrangements, a remarkable work. We hear sounds, sometimes dreamlike, sometimes psychedelic; sometimes more pop, and sound layers from everywhere, but skillfully measured well.
Ideal album... In retrospect, we can say if an album is a part of an ideal discotheque. But I indeed believe that the time will prove that this record is an inescapable. Furthermore, the record sleeve is representative of what is music, a kind of disturbing and comforting dreamlike universe at the same moment. To get itself!
A heavenly listening of Marc-André Pilon

.... Patrick Watson are from Montreal even if they were not born there. "Are", because Patrick Watson is a band, which goes by the name of its chief composer. Classic pianist and of jazz formation, Mr. Watson likes quoting Debussy and Satie among his main influences and although his music is rather directed rock / songwriter we find there well all these elements. His accompaniments in the piano are always magnificent, often moving, reminding the sensibility of the Maximilian Hecker's first album. The result is nevertheless far from being uncluttered. The band likes playing on sound textures, surrounding melodies in submarine atmospheres by means of sample vocal repeated and put in echo or of an inflatable ball freeing slowly its air on the ropes of a guitar. Far from locking yourself into a yoke singer/songwriter, the band does not hesitate to experiment, to go away from melodies to deconstruct completely the song and enter wilder, rougher territories, without ever losing the attention of the listener.....

.... He doesn't need complicated equipments to hold the room in his hand. He proves it by coming down in the public, for one «Man under the sea «without microphone, accompanied in the acoustic guitar and in the drum by the rest of the band come with him. The sceptics were convinced, they can return on stage to end the song on inspirations of pianos and electric guitar Blog "entre nous soit dit" (french language) http://entrenoussoitdit.blogspot.com/2007/05/patrick-watson.html
